About Bay Oaks

Friends of Bay Oaks

Bay Oaks Recreation Center has been the heart of recreation and wellness on Fort Myers Beach for nearly 40 years. It has served generations of residents through youth sports, fitness programs, senior activities, camps, community events, and as a gathering place during both celebrations and times of recovery.

History of Bay Oaks

The land that is now Bay Oaks was once owned by Dr. W.B. Winkler, one of Estero Island’s largest landowners. His holdings included the property that would later become Bay Oaks Recreation Center, Matanzas Pass Preserve, Beach Elementary School, and other community landmarks.

Lee County later acquired the property and designated it for public recreation. Construction of Bay Oaks began in 1985, and by April 1986 the outdoor recreation facilities, including ballfields and courts, had opened to the public.

On October 23, 1986, Bay Oaks Recreation Center officially opened as a nearly 18,000-square-foot facility featuring two basketball courts, meeting rooms, a weight room, tennis courts, athletic fields, and open recreation areas.

Over the years, Bay Oaks expanded to include a community pool and water slide, disc golf, senior programming, summer camps, pickleball, fitness classes, and numerous special events. It became known as the community’s living room—a place where generations learned to swim, played sports, and built lifelong friendships.

In 1998, Lee County and the Town of Fort Myers Beach entered into an interlocal agreement to jointly operate Bay Oaks. On October 1, 2009, ownership and operation officially transferred to the Town of Fort Myers Beach.

Following Hurricane Ian in September 2022, Bay Oaks sustained significant damage but once again became a symbol of resilience and recovery for the island community.

Today, Friends of Bay Oaks is committed to preserving this legacy while helping create the next chapter—one that expands recreation, wellness, and community opportunities for generations to come.
